Big Tech under scanner after India decides to tag them as content publishers

India is changing its policies with regard to the social media content that is accessible to people.

A few months ago, the Indian government had already announced its decision to monitor the content that will be going on social media/OTT platforms and operate accordingly and now in continuation to it, it will also be keeping a keen eye on the Big Tech firms that may affect its decision.

Not just India, but the majority of the nations around the world are keeping an eye on the misuse of the social media platforms. Australia already has planned a wide range of inquiries so that it can keep monitoring the situation of the big technology companies in the world.

The actions that are taken by these countries such as India and Australia are targeted at tech companies which are most popular and have the widest reach in the world.

This includes platforms such as Meta (formerly Facebook), Alphabet Inc, and Twitter. The companies are already struggling with the trust factors as many nations are not being able to support them in their handling of privacy issues.

The Australian prime minister already suggested coming up with additional policies last week. Scott Morrison suggested that there is a need to have a wide scope where governments can question the algorithms these big tech companies follow and how it impacts society. India too is at the brink of finalising the data protection law and as per latest developments is considering to classify social media platforms as content publishers.
