Avani Lekhara becomes the first Indian woman to bring Paralympic gold to India, PM Modi extends his wishes

India’s journey in the ongoing Paralympic 2020 has been no less than exceptional and it has become all the more special with a gold-winning shooter Avani Lekhara. 

History was once again made on August 30 when the Indian shooter became the first woman to win a Paralympics gold for the country. Not only this gave a lot of inspiration to sports aspirants but the player also received a lot of love because of the sheer determination she showed in Tokyo. 

With the medal, the 19-year-old shooter also became only the fourth Indian athlete to win a Paralympics gold after swimmer Murlikant Petkar (1972), javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia (2004 and 2016) and high jumper Thangavelu Mariyappan (2016).

Among the many leaders, known personalities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also the one to congratulate the young and talented shooter. He took to Twitter to say, “This is truly a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes for your future endeavors.”

He stressed that it was indeed a hard-earned and well-deserved gold that came her way and it was also possible due to her industrious nature and her passion for shooting. Mod’s wishes came minutes after the shooter made history at Tokyo. 

The PM also reportedly spoke to the shooter over a call and called her win a matter of great pride for the nation. There was another special gift waiting for the shooter after the ultimate feat she had achieved.

The chairman of the Mahindra Group, Anand Mahindra not only congratulated the athlete but also announced that the company will dedicate its first-ever customized sport utility vehicle (SUV) for those with disabilities.

Along with them, many others quickly started pouring in wishes for the shooter. From the President of India to a former paralympic champion herself, Deepa Mallik.
