India and Australia are coming closer in farm trade, despite growing tension for both nations with a common trade enemy, China. In a virtual interaction between Agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar and his Australian counterpart David Littleproud, an official has confirmed that both are working towards a partnership in the farming industry.
This is going to spill good news for trade and partnership between both the nations; and will also open avenues for technological partnerships and access to other markets.
Canberra’s falling from grace with China has been a boon for India. Australia is also working hard to ramp up its military power and preparedness in the wake of possible threatening messaging that China has sounded in social media over the last month.
Apart from alliance in farming, Australia is giving its market access to India for export of Indian pomegranates. A joint plan is still to be worked out for access to Indian mangoes and pomegranates. The Australian minister also assured access to items, such as okra and pomegranate arils. Australia is seeking access to sell barley, a major produce of their country.
This movement is a successor to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership announced by prime ministers of India and Australia during their summit on June 4, 2020. India is also moving closer to the UK over sharing technology and allowing entrepreneurship investments into the UK.
Australia has lost a major trade partner in China. Its main exports include meat, wool and wine that were heavily dependent on Chinese consumption. Even coal exports have been dwindling over increasing pressure on controlling carbon emissions under the Paris Agreement.
Australia ever since has been scouting for new business partners because it is highly unlikely that things will ever go back to normal with China.
