Assembly poll results: Saffron shining bright in 4 states, AAP sweeps Punjab

There have been momentous changes in the Indian political scenario over the last decade, and this is vividly evident through the results of the Assembly elections in five states that were announced today. Uttar Pradesh has registered a historically spectacular win for the national party BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party). With retaining power in UP and Uttarakhand, and taking a substantial lead in Manipur and Goa, BJP has clearly set the tone for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

As per the latest trends, BJP is all set to retain the state of Uttar Pradesh with the ruling party leading with 270 seats and Akhilesh Yadav led Samajwadi Party (SP) maintaining hold in 128 constituencies in 403 seated UP Legislative Assembly. With this Yogi Adityanath would be the only Chief Minister of UP to come into power for a second consecutive term since 1985.

These assembly polls in UP have also been historic for BJP as the party increased its vote share in the state from 39.7 per cent in 2017 polls to around 42 per cent in 2022. The Samajwadi Party, headed by former Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, the Bahujan Samaj Party headed by Mayawati are strong contenders of BJP in UP. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra displayed an impressive show as she spearheaded the campaign for Congress in the state.

As per the latest figures from EC, AAP has won 92 seats which is in comfortable lead than the required 59. AAP’s CM candidate Bhagwant Mann won in Dhuri with a margin of 58,206 votes. Mann said, “I will take oath as the CM in Bhagat Singh’s village Khatkarkalan, not at the Raj Bhawan.”

In Manipur, chief minister N Biren Singh along with BJP will retain power after defeating Congress candidate P Sharatchandra after receiving 24,814 votes while the latter could secure only 6,543 votes.
