Rajnath Singh indicated about the assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir. The assembly seats are going to increase from 83 to 90, a total of 7 seats will be added.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh has given an important statement regarding the assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

He said on Friday that the electoral process in Jammu and Kashmir can start by the end of this year.

Talking about the recently concluded delimitation process, Singh said that the structure of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly is going to change and now there will be 47 seats in Kashmir and 43 in Jammu.

Election Process Initiative

Addressing an event in Jammu and Kashmir, Rajnath Singh said, “I think the election process should also start by the end of this year. There is a strong possibility of that.”

Before Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah had said that after the completion of the delimitation process, elections would be held in the Union Territory.

Now that the Delimitation Commission has released its report, the possibility of taking steps in this direction has increased.

Jammu & Kashmir Statehood & Restoration

Amit Shah, who was on a visit to Kashmir in January this year, had said that the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir would be restored once the “situation normalizes” and assembly elections would be held as soon as the delimitation process was completed.

He had said, “I have given assurance in Parliament that as soon as the situation becomes normal, Jammu and Kashmir will get full statehood.”

J&K Assembly Seats Counting

Last month, the Delimitation Commission released its report.

It was said that the assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir would be increased from 83 to 90. of the 7 new seats, 6 will be in Jammu and 1 in Kashmir.

With this, the total number of seats in Jammu will increase from 37 to 43 and in Kashmir from 46 to 47.

However, the number of Lok Sabha seats has not changed and J&K will continue to have five Lok Sabha seats as before.

Delimitation Commission Report

Some political parties in Jammu and Kashmir are opposing the delimitation. Describing it as a violation of the Constitution, he said that it is trying to weaken the powers of the people here.

The Delimitation Commission was given a year’s time to submit its recommendations, but it was later extended. In the initial phase, the National Conference did not attend the meetings.

Article 370 Was Abolished In 2019

In August 2019, the central government had bifurcated the state into two union territories, abrogated Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

The government has made Jammu and Kashmir a separate and Ladakh a separate union territory.

This was one of the big promises of the BJP before the elections and in May 2019, just a few months after assuming power for the second time, the Modi government fulfilled this promise.
