Apple has taken a surprising turn by choosing India as the launchpad for making its latest gadget, the iPhone 17, even before it starts in China. This is a big deal because, until now, China was the go-to place for Apple to start making new iPhones.
Analysts tell us that Apple plans to begin this new chapter in India around the second half of 2025. It’s a big sign that India is becoming more important for Apple, not just for selling their products but also for making them.
So, why is Apple preferring India over China? There are a few reasons. For starters, India is growing fast as a hub for tech and manufacturing.
Apple sees this as a chance to reduce its reliance on China, where they have faced challenges like trade tensions and other issues. Making iPhones in India also means they can get closer to the Indian customers, which is a huge market for them.
Apple is also getting along well with the Indian government. They’re teaming up with Tata, for assembling iPhones. This is a smart move because it shows Apple trusts in India, and it helps them with the government and customers alike.
As of 2023, about 12 to 14 percent of iPhones that are sold globally are made in India. That’s already a pretty significant share. But here’s the kicker: by 2024, this number could jump to 20 to 25 percent. That’s a big leap, showing that Apple is really putting its bets on India.
At the same time, Foxconn, which makes iPhones for Apple, is shifting its focus more towards India. They are behind most of the iPhone production in India, while their production in China is actually going down.
