Swiss star and one of the greatest of the sport, Roger Federer is 39 and is all prepared to test himself at the Wimbledon this year, which will be the 21st time he will be competing in the tournament. The tennis star discussed his fitness and desire to be associated with the sport and shared what keeps him motivated at all times.
Roger Federer will be turning 40 this August and it is not unknown to the people associated with the sport that by the time you reach such an age, your body suffers more than those under 30. For a sport like Tennis, it is not just running through the court that is required as a player needs to be equally good with handling strength.
Backhand, forehand strength shots, services, placements, everything matters especially when the sport is racing newer heights everyday in terms of competitiveness. When things become so serious, a lot of strain or stress may lead to injury. Because of the injuries, a lot of players tend to retire but Federer has managed to be in the big three even now.
The likes of Rafal Nadal, Roger Federer participate in limited tournaments so that they focus on their fitness more than anything else. Hence it was a good time for Federer to talk about his longevity saying that it is easy for people to think that people of his age have found that one very thing that keeps them happy and motivated but it is not the case every time.
The world star also shared that it was never his goal to play till 39 or 40 and rather wanted to step aside by 35. The players who he started playing with and against, all retired at an early age and they are happy about it but with Federer, he feels that he still loves the game enough to continue to be competitive about it and play it at world stage.
He said that he will examine if gets the desired results and hence this platform, Wimbledon, is extremely important to him. When the Swiss player was young, it was not his extraordinary talent that took the Tennis world by storm but it was his consistency. He never gave up on court and losses never seemed to bother him and that is probably the reason he has become one of the finest talents of the sport.
He will be fighting the world number one Serbian player Novak Djokovic in one of the matches in his favourite grass court at the Wimbledon.
But he is not the only player who is regarded as old yet fit enough to continue to play tennis. Serena Willams is another such player. No one can dismiss that Serena is a powerful player and on her days, she can really turn things around. For a tournament like Wimbelodn, you can put the hardest draw in front of Serene and yet, whatever may be the conditions, she will come out as the winner.
