15th BRICS Summit 2023 Inducts 6 New Countries, World Hails India
At the 15th BRICS Summit 2023, a deal to expand the BRICS group of leading developing countries appeared to be stuck in negotiations.
The expansion of BRICS, which currently includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, could allow other interested nations to seek admission.
The BRICS summit witnessed the inclusion of 6 countries- Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Argentina, Iran, UAE and Ethiopia.
More than 20 nations from the Global South have formally requested to join BRICS ahead of the summit. If Saudi Arabia and Indonesia were to join, an expanded BRICS would account for 44% of the global economy by 2040, surpassing the predicted share of 21% for the Group of Seven (G7).
The push for expansion is largely driven by China, with the backing of Russia and South Africa. China and Russia are pushing for the expansion to create a viable counterweight to the West and give more influence to the “Global South.”
There are divisions among the leaders over how much and how quickly the expansion should happen. The debate over enlargement has been the main topic of discussion at the three-day summit in Johannesburg.
India is concerned that a bigger BRICS would become a mouthpiece for China, while Brazil is worried about alienating the West. The future of BRICS lies with the participation of the 5 main countries.
The involvement of several countries may trigger potential risks in future. It seems that India has already predicted that but China, Russia & South Africa can’t analyze this. It is yet to see the next developments.
