10.4 Crore Ujjwala Homes Spark Record Rise in LPG Use, Says Hardeep Singh Puri

The clean cooking revolution has also acquired renewed momentum in India, as a crunch in the use of LPG as a result of 10.4 crore households under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) has been pointed out by Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. On the effects of the scheme, Puri stated that the mass use of LPG has already changed most kitchens in rural and semi-urban India, and to a large extent, the use of traditional biomass fuels has been abandoned.
The minister observed that there has been a constant increase in the use of LPG over the last ten years, which has been a sign of increased access and usage by the beneficiaries. Specific government requirements like subsidies on the specific items, cylinders delivered to the doorstep, and better distribution channels have been instrumental in making it affordable and reliable.
Other than being convenient, the transition to LPG has provided significant health and environmental advantages, especially to women, through reducing indoor air pollution. Puri underscored the fact that PMUY will continue to be at the heart of India’s endeavour towards inclusive growth, energy security, and better living standards of millions of families.
