Yuvraj Singh was arrested under various sections of IPC (Indian Penal Court) and SC/ST Act. He was released after three hours of questioning on interim bail. Yuvraj Singh, the former all-rounder was arrested under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc, and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration) of the IPC and Section 3(1)(u) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention and Atrocities) Act. The charges were booked on the complaint of a Hansi-based lawyer and activist, Rajat Kalsan.
Superintendent of Hansi Police Nitika Gahlaut said, “We only made a formal arrest and he was released on bail in compliance of the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.” DSP Vinod Shankar added, “Yuvraj Singh came to Hansi on Saturday and we made a formal arrest. He was released on bail bond after a few hours.”
Kalsan, a Dalit activist, had filed a complaint against Yuvraj Singh last year for allegedly using a ‘casteist slur’ to refering to Yuzvendra Chahal, a former teammate. The incident took place in April 2020 during a live session with Rohit Sharma, current vice-captain of team India. The complaint was registered in June, alleging that remarks by Singh were intentional and violate and defame the entire Dalit community.
Yuvraj Singh had soon after released a public statement apologizing and regretting the statements. “This is to clarify that I have never believed in any kind of disparity, be it on the basis of caste, colour, creed or gender. I have given and continue to spend my life for the welfare of people. I believe in the dignity of life and respect each individual without exception. I understand that while I was having a conversation with my friends, I was misunderstood, which was unwarranted. However, as a responsible Indian I want to say that I have unintentionally hurt anybody’s sentiments or feelings, I would like to express regrets for the same. My love for India and all its people is eternal,” Singh had said.
