WPL 2023: Cricket Women’s Premier League Begins Today

Interestingly today’s opening teams ‘Gujarat Giants’ and ‘Mumbai Indians’ are owned by the Adani Group and Mukesh Ambani respectively.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced its plans to organize a women’s IPL-style tournament by 2023 around this time last year. The then-president and secretary of the board, Sourav Ganguly and Jay Shah, showed an interest in establishing the league as soon as possible after learning that there was a sizable market for women’s cricket on the Indian subcontinent.

With each victory on the playing field—the national women’s team won the Asia Cup, came in second at the Commonwealth Games, and captured the ODI series in England—the demand for it increased.

With the debut of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 on March 4, Indian cricket history will advance significantly. The first tournament, which will take place from March 4 to 26 and is expected to be entertaining, will begin on March 4 with a game between the Mumbai Indians Women and Gujarat Giants Women at the DY Patil stadium in Mumbai.

Beth Mooney will serve as the club’s captain, and Indian all-rounder Sneh Rana will serve as vice-captain. The squad added 18 players to its roster during last month’s auction.

The batters Dayalan Hemalatha, Ashleigh Gardner, Harleen Deol, and Sophia Dunkley, as well as the bowlers Sneh Rana, Georgia Warehem, Mansi Joshi, and Annabel Sutherland, are important players to keep an eye on.

Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur will be in charge of Mukesh Ambani’s Indiawin Sports’ Mumbai Indians Women. They acquired 18 players in the February auction, much like their rivals.

Important players include bowlers Issy Wong, Sonam Yadav, Pooja Vastrakar, Amelia Kerr, and Nat Sciver-Brunt, as well as batsmen Harmanpreet Kaur, Hayley Matthews, Hamaira Kazi, Neelam Bisht, and Yastika Bhatia.

Harmanpreet Kaur and Nat Sciver-Brunt will be the two Mumbai Indians players to keep an eye on in this game. For Gujarat Giants, Beth Mooney and Ashleigh Gardner will be crucial.

Major broadcaster Viacom18 has put together a remarkable team of professionals to cover the competition.
