World Suicide Prevention Day: India’s Young at High Risk, Say Experts

Today is September 10 the World Suicide Prevention Day today experts are raising concerns over the increasing suicide rates among young people in India. The theme for this year for this day is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”. It aims to combat stigma and promote awareness around this critical issue.

India records more youth suicides than many other nations. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) over 40% of suicides involve individuals under the age of 30. Suicide is now the fourth leading cause of death among adolescents aged 15-19.

Professor Nand Kumar from AIIMS said that approximately 160 young people die by suicide every day in India. He said, “The number of young suicides in India is nearly double the global average”. Stressful family dynamics, mental health struggles, failed relationships, and isolation are some of the driving factors behind these tragedies.

According to the data of 2022 over 1.71 lakh suicide deaths were recorded in India. Dr Shyam Bhat who is the Chairperson of LiveLove described suicide as one of the most serious health challenges for people of the age group 15 to 39 years.

The government has launched initiatives such as the National Mental Health Program and the Kiran Helpline. Experts stress the need for more open dialogue, better mental health care access, and a supportive environment free of stigma.

Professor Kumar said a comprehensive approach is needed that goes beyond simply identifying at-risk individuals. “We really need to focus on enhancing emotional, social, and physical well-being to prevent suicide.”
