The World Health Organization (WHO) introduced World No Tobacco Day to spread awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco use. Every year, individuals and organizations – governmental and non-governmental, and stakeholders from different sectors gather as part of this campaign.
On this internationally celebrated day, the World Health Organization and other national and public health institutions are appealing and demanding policy changes to reduce and control tobacco consumption worldwide.
It all started when the World Health Organization issued a resolution on May 15, 1987 to celebrate World No Tobacco Day on April 7, 1988. This date also coincides with the World Health Organization’s 40th anniversary.
There has been a growing demand for tobacco bans in many countries around the world. The goal was to draw people’s attention to the harmful effects of tobacco.
People all over the world have been urged to refrain from using tobacco in any form for 24 hours. It was intended to encourage and support individuals to quit or at least reduce smoking in the long run.
In 1988, another resolution was adopted to celebrate the International Abstinence Day smoking on May 31 each year.
Like other countries, the widespread celebration of World No Tobacco Day is celebrated. Various governmental and non-governmental organizations strongly advocate an end to tobacco consumption.
Government agencies such as the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare spread awareness through advertising campaigns and educational programs. It also introduces changes at the policy level, such as a ban on smoking in public places.
Civil society participates actively and takes the initiative to organize demonstrations, marches and information campaigns to spread awareness among the people.
People from different sectors of society, activists and experts gather to organize meetings, public debates, works of art, facilities, health camps and other innovative tobacco control activities.
Rallies, marches and marches aim to bring about a change in the mindset of people who consume tobacco.
The World Health Organization plays a key role in organizing World Tobacco Day. Every year, it promotes a special substance related to tobacco consumption and its impact on health and society.
The theme becomes the main component through which the entire campaign is visualized. The theme of World No Tobacco Day 2022 is “Tobacco: Threat to our environment.”
