Women’s World Cup: Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur make history with India biggest partnership

The ongoing Women’s world cup did not provide an ideal start to the Indian cricket team however, the second match against West Indies was enough for the girls to get their form back and roar back in style by securing India’s biggest partnership.

Indian opener Smriti Mandhana and t20 captain Harmanpreet Kaur made headlines with their knock against West Indies at the Seddon Park in Hamilton on Saturday.  The two players added 184 runs four wickets down making them breach the record previously held by Thirush Kamini and Punam Raut.

Raut and Kamini put a total of 175 runs on the scoreboard in the 2013 Women’s World Cup in India. Mandhana and Harmanpreet put up a fabulous show with class batting as they managed centuries for themselves to let India recover after losing three wickets.

Due to their brilliant display of batting, India posed a strong total of 317 for eight in 50 overs. The opener scored 123 runs from 119-ball while Kaur took 107-ball for 109 against her name. India started with a string opening but soon wickets fell leading the country to a run drought till the pair arrived.

In the beginning, Yastika Bhatia gave India a solid start with smashing 31 off just 21 deliveries but was sent back to the pavilion by Shakera Selman in the seventh over. Mithali Raj, Indian skipper, could not maintain her form as she fell from five runs leaving India with 58/2 in the 10th over.

Mandhana has been coming later from her usual spot but has managed to leave an impact even then. Shamilia Connell then came to the scene when Kaur and Mandhana were at their peak and sent the latter back to her seat in 43rd over.

Needless to say, despite the innings getting slowed down, the partnership between the two made for a strong total resulting in India beating West Indies by 155 runs. I think scoring a century and not being a Player of the Match is something which I wouldn’t really want as a player,” Mandhana said as she received the player of the match trophy and shared it with Kaur.
