Women’s Cricket Team announced for England series, Shafali Verma makes the cut

BCCI announced women’s cricket on Friday with the new addition of youngster Shafali Verma in the squad. The team has been announced for the only test match, ODI and T20 match against England.

It was expected that the 17-year-old would make the cut as she was in great form in the previous tournament and would prove to be a great asset as an opening batswomen. Other than that Shika Pandey has also managed to make a comeback in the team after she was dropped for the home series against South Africa.

Pandey is an important addition to the team especially ahead of the 50-over world cup in February next year. The ODI and test team will be led by the experienced senior Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet kaur will be captaining the T20 team. Kaur has been struggling t reagins her form after the T20 world cup.

Even during the women’s IPL, Kaur was seen struggling with her form. Wicket Keeping department will be handled by Tania Bhatia and Indrani Roy, who will also be handling the middle order for the team. This will be a golden opportunity for Roy who represents Jharkhand in the domestic circuit.

Former Indian women’s team coach Ramesh Powar has been re-appointed replacing head coach WV Raman after his second stint. On Thursday, Powar’s appointment was confirmed after much controversy in the Indian cricket circuit.

The upcoming series against England is a huge opportunity for the team to prepare for the world cup. It was also a historic one-off test against the English side in Bristol. The tournament, which will start from June 16, is essentially a part of the multi-format event which includes three ODI’s and three T20 Internationals.

The test has been confirmed to take place in Bristol County Ground from June 16 to June 19. Earlier this year, Jay Shah, BCCi secretary had talked about the tournament but the dates and venues were not disclosed.

New Zealand will also be a part of the series and an official from England, ECB Chief Executive Officer, Tom Harrison, also expressed his excitement to host the two nations. “We’re really looking forward to a busy summer in what is a huge year for our England Women’s team, and we’re very excited about hosting India and New Zealand,” he said.
