Women Empowerment: From Triple Talaq Ban To Women’s Reservation Bill

The Indian govt is consistently working towards empowering women. The Women’s Reservation Bill is to set gender equality in the country’s decision making.

The Women’s Reservation Bill is a proposed law that if passed in the parliament, there will be a new law which reserves 33% of seats in the Lok Sabha (India’s lower house of Parliament) and state legislative assemblies for women.

This bill is extremely important for all of us because it will promote gender equality and increase women’s participation in politics.

It will address the underrepresentation of women in India’s political landscape. It will give women a fair chance to be elected to important decision-making positions.

The history of this bill goes back several decades. It was first introduced in the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of Parliament) in 1996 but faced significant opposition and was not passed. Over the years, there have been numerous attempts to pass it, but the bill kept facing roadblocks.

The Modi government has been working towards providing women with equal opportunities and promoting their participation in various ways.

This includes schemes like –

  • Beti Bachao (Save the Girl Child),
  • Ujjwala Yojna (providing LPG connections to women), and
  • Promoting women’s ownership of houses under the PM Awas Yojna.

The BJP government has also abolished triple talaq from the Muslim communities, increased financial inclusion, and extended collateral-free MUDRA loans to empower women economically.

The Rajya Sabha is the next step in the legislative process for the bill. Currently the bill is scheduled to be presented there for discussion.

Actresses Kangana Ranaut, Esha Gupta, and a few other celebrities also supported the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament. They were among various women from different fields who visited the new Parliament building.

Kangana Ranaut called it a historic day and thanked Prime Minister Modi for focusing on women’s empowerment. She mentioned her role as an air force pilot in an upcoming film to highlight women’s expanding roles.
