With 5G rolling out, 40 Million Indians could take up in its first year of availability

India is ready and an inch closer to having 5G mobile networks in the country. The Department of Telecommunications, Ministry of Communications of the Government of India has passed the approvals for 5G trials and has been given a green signal to telecom companies to begin trials for 5G spectrums. With this announcement, key players of the telecom industry such as Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vi got their ball rolling. Reliance Jio has already confirmed that they will be developing a homegrown and indigenous 5G network while Bharti Airtel had confirmed a successful 5G test over the commercial network. Government officials also emphasized that Chinese vendors will be kept out of these trials, and telecom equipment companies including Huawei will not be able to take part in the 5G trials.

Although, many 5G handsets have been available in the Indian market still smartphone users are waiting to experience 5G mobile connectivity for better reach. Ericsson ConsumerLab conducted a study and they revealed that at least 40 million smartphone users are likely to take up 5G in the first year of it being introduced in India. Also, it was drawn from the survey that these users are willing to pay up to 50per cent more for 5G plans if they are bundled with digital services. Increasing the number of users, 67 per cent of users in India are eager to upgrade to 5G once it is available.

This is a surge of 14 percent more users since 2019. If things would have gone smoothly country-wide, it was estimated that by the end of 2020, increased awareness of service and value benefits could have resulted in 22 percent more smartphone users with 5G-ready handsets.

Interestingly, it is revealed that one-third of urban internet users would prefer using 5G home broadband instead of the existing fixed home broadband. They are ready to discontinue their current internet provider. Keeping in mind the young population of the country which cares for gaming, the survey also states users of 5G-ready smartphones in India expect to spend more time on enhanced video streaming and multiplayer mobile gaming.

They predict spending 7.5 to 8 hours a week on XR apps by 2025. The early adopters of the 5G service are expected to provide two times more than speed or battery life in delivering satisfactory 5G experiences.
