night curfew will not affect sugar supply

As India’s economy is in threat again to reel under pressure from the surging numbers in Covid-19 infection, the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) has confirmed that night curfew will not have a huge impact on the supply of sugar nationwide.
Night curfew is being imposed as a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and in a more organized manner in some states where the surging numbers are looking at putting pressure on the whole state infrastructure. Surprisingly, the country’s sugar production has reached 29.09 million tonnes as of April 15 for the season (October-September), which is much higher than 24.82 million tonnes in the year-ago period.
It is therefore no surprise that ISMA has pegged the country’s sugar production at 30.2 million tonne for the 2020-21 seasons, as against 27.42 million tonne in the previous year. Mills have had healthy sale too. The recovery of the economy, as most political analysts are saying has definitely been healthier than expected.
Another big surprise is that the state that has reported the maximum cases of Covid cases has shown the healthiest sugar output. Maharashtra’s sugar production rose to 10.39 million from 6.7 million last season. This is unlike UP, the largest sugar producer that has recorded marginally low output from its last year’s production numbers.
Bihar, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Rajasthan, and Odisha have already closed their crushing operations for the current season, while others except Haryana are on the verge of closure shortly.
The industry is applauding a more systematic approach to curfew. Narendra Modi has clearly stated that he does not look at the complete lockdown of the country, owing to the huge economic breakdown and loss that will follow, amidst also, running election fervor across the states.
Meanwhile, election campaigning has been disrupted due to a surge in Covid-19 cases across the country. Many contesting candidates have also been reported infected and have had to suspend rallies.
