Why India Is Awaiting Alternative Fuel Over Petrol And Diesel?

India should not worry about the skyrocketing prices of petrol and diesel as the Centre has plans to ramp up ethanol production, has confirmed an official statement by Nitin Gadkari, India’s Union Minister. 

India can look at using Ethanol as an alternate vehicular fuel soon. Mr. Gadkari made the announcement while addressing a virtual conference organized by BRICS Network University. He mentioned that automobile makers are producing flex-fuel engines in Brazil, Canada, and the US providing an alternative to customers to use 100 percent petrol or 100 percent bio-ethanol.

India is extremely serious about getting itself noticed on the world map when it comes to environmental preservation initiatives like shifting to green fuel alternatives. The use of ethanol is said to be more cost-effective and less polluting to the environment. Under the Paris Agreement, countries worldwide have been asked to contribute towards reducing the carbon footprint in their respective geographical areas.

One can look at paying 40 per cent less for ethanol fuel than petrol or diesel. Gadkari pointed out that the ethanol price will be Rs 60-62 per litre and the petrol price is more than Rs 100 per litre. “As far as the caloric value of ethanol is concerned, the 750 ml of petrol or 800 ml is equal to 1 litre of ethanol, still there is Rs 20 saving per litre,” the road transport and highways minister said.

Multiple price hikes have troubled Maharashtra and Hyderabad in the last few weeks. Other states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Ladakh have also seen price hikes. The hike has now touched Rs. 100 a liter for petrol. A reassuring point is that ethanol is widely used in racing cars, vouching for the efficiency of this import-friendly substitute.
