Why Has Mumbai Court Summoned Javed Akhtar On Kangana Ranaut’s Complaint?

The court summoned Javed Akhtar because of a complaint filed against him by actor Kangana Ranaut under sections 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (insult to the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.

The legal battle between the two began after Javed Akhtar approached the police with a complaint against Kangana for allegedly defaming him during an interview she gave to a television channel in 2020.

In response, Kangana filed a counter-complaint against Akhtar, claiming that he had threatened and criminally intimidated her during a personal dispute she had with another actor (Hrithik Roshan).

In 2016, Javed Akhtar had called Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel to his home to discuss their public spat with actor Hrithik Roshan.

During this meeting, Javed allegedly asked Kangana to tender a written apology to Hrithik, to which she objected. She later revealed in a 2020 interview that Javed had threatened her during this meeting.

In the court proceedings, Dr. Ramesh Agarwal, Javed’s physician, was summoned as a witness. He stated that the meeting between Javed and Kangana lasted for about 20-30 minutes.

But he supported Javed Akhtar and denied hearing any defamatory words being spoken during the meeting.

Kangana’s lawyer inquired if the actor had asked Javed or Ramesh Agarwal to mediate in the dispute between her and Hrithik, but the doctor denied such involvement.

Ramesh said that he was present at the meeting at the request of Javed Akhtar. He stated that the agenda of the meeting was for both Kangana and Hrithik to apologize to each other.

However, he was not aware that Javed had not called the Roshan family and only asked Kangana to apologize.

After the meeting, Kangana informed Ramesh Agarwal that she felt uncomfortable with the situation because initially both she and Hrithik were supposed to apologize, but later she was the only one being asked to apologize.

The court is proceeding with the trial in the case between Javed Akhtar against Kangana Ranaut, and as part of the ongoing legal proceedings, Kangana’s complaint against Javed has led to his summoning by the court on August 5th.
