A joke about the “Modi surname” allegedly made by Congressman Rahul Gandhi led to criminal defamation charges. Gandhi was found responsible by Surat District Court.

Rahul Gandhi, a Congress Member, was sentenced to two years in prison by the Surat District Court in the criminal defamation case brought against him because of his alleged “Modi surname” statement.

Later, according to ANI, the court granted him bail. The leader was released on bail with a Rs. 15,000 bail bond.

Rahul Gandhi was accused of saying “how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname” in the incident, according to a complaint made by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi.

The complainant claimed that the divisive remark was made at a rally in Kolar, Karnataka, before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and that it defamed the entire Modi community.

When Mr. Gandhi arrived in Surat earlier in the day for the verdict, senior members of the Gujarat branch of the Congress welcomed him.

Party members and supporters flocked to various locations across the city as a show of force and support for Mr. Gandhi.

There were also signs praising him as “Sher-e-Hindustan(the Lion of India) and stating that the Congress will not bow before the dictatorship of the BJP .

According to Mr. Gandhi’s attorney Kirit Panwala, the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma concluded hearing closing arguments from both parties last week and declared that it was prepared to issue its decision in the four-year defamation case.
