In Telangana’s political landscape, there was an occasion in focus is the swearing-in of newly elected MLAs (Members of Legislative Assembly) in Telangana assembly. It’s a customary procedure where elected representatives take an oath before they officially start their work as MLAs.
But BJP MLAs, led by T Raja Singh, have decided to boycott this oath-taking ceremony. Why? Well, it’s because of who has been appointed as the pro-tem speaker: Akbaruddin Owaisi of AIMIM.
A pro-tem speaker is a temporary role, chosen to oversee the assembly until a full-time speaker is elected. Akbaruddin Owaisi, having won his sixth term, was chosen for this role by the Governor, Tamilisai Soundararajan.

The BJP’s boycott was due to the past incidents involving Akbaruddin Owaisi. In particular, a speech he made in 2012, created quite a stir. In this speech, Owaisi made a provocative statement.
He claimed that if the police were removed for 15 minutes, 100 crore Hindus would be finished by Muslims. This statement was highly hateful and led to legal action against him, although he was acquitted last year.
Akbaruddin Owaisi is a member of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) party. He is the younger brother of AIMIM party head Asaduddin Owaisi. Akbaruddin is known for his controversial speeches, and hate against Hindus. He has been an influential figure in his state’s Muslim community.
T Raja Singh, the BJP MLA from Goshamahal, voiced strong opposition to taking an oath under Owaisi after the Assembly Elections. He cited Owaisi’s past statements and actions, expressing discomfort and disapproval. Singh emphasized that he would only take the oath once a full-time speaker is appointed, a stand he has maintained since a similar situation in 2018.
This situation reveals the deep political divisions and the impact of past statements in the current political climate. The BJP’s decision not to participate in the oath-taking ceremony has aware the Hindu community about the hatred spread by Akbaruddin Owaisi, and his past controversial remarks.
