The prominent TIME magazine recently released its annual list of the ‘World’s Greatest Places’ for 2023, with a couple of Indian destinations making it to the 50-entry list this year as well. While Mayurbhanj has been selected for its rare tigers and ancient temples, Ladakh is chosen for adventures and eats.
This year, the travel industry is back in full swing, the magazine noted, adding increasing costs and climbing interest in sustainability and authenticity are changing the way people used to travel.
It has created profile pages for the two Indian destinations where it has underscored the reasons why these spots made it to its prestigious list.
Ladakh in the farthest-flung part of North India is known for the Tibetan Buddhist culture and astonishing alpine landscapes, the magazine said, adding the Hanle village, about 168 miles southeast of Leh, is perfect for astronomical splendour as it has around 270 clear nights a year. India designated its first Dark Sky Reserve in the village this year.
Time magazine also recommended a few properties in the region, such as Kyagar Hotel in Nubra Valley, to maintain a sustainable lifestyle.
Meanwhile, Mayurbhanj in the eastern state of Odisha also made it to the list, owing to its green landscape, ancient temples, and rich cultural legacy. The magazine noted that Mayurbhanj is the only place on the planet to spot the increasingly rare black tiger. Nevertheless, apart from the Similipal National Park, the district also has a number of other underrated spots up its sleeves.
The list includes 50 entries. Here are the top 10 for this year.
Kerala and Ahmedabad were the two Indian destinations that made it to TIME’s ‘World’s Greatest Places’ last year.
