A new WhatsApp security update has been introduced to users. The new privacy measure prevents unknown contacts from seeing a user’s last seen and online status. The app already gives users the option to hide their last seen and online activities from anyone they want or from people who are not on the contact list.
However, the new update will prevent unknown contacts from getting a user’s last seen if they have never chatted with them. The new privacy settings that affect who can see or cannot see a user’s online status are supposed to work automatically unlike the turn-on and turn-off options enabled by the users. Reportedly, some users are now unable to see the last seen of some contacts and business accounts.
As per the report by WABetaInfo, the new update will also protect users from third-party apps from seeing when they are online. There are certain apps that can stalk people’s WhatsApp activities, and the new privacy measures will prevent them from stalking people. Despite the “Nobody” privacy option being enabled, these third-party apps track the activities of the users. Reportedly, they also log them for anyone who wants to keep surveillance on WhatsApp users.
WhatsApp customer support explained that this is an important measure to improve the privacy and security of the platform. The customer support further explains how it will make it harder for people to not see users’ last seen and online presence. The customer support also confirmed that the new privacy features are now effective for all WhatsApp contacts including business accounts.
The new features of the update also include enabling disappearing messages by default in new chats by selecting the ‘Default Message Timer’. Disappearing messages now include 24 hours, 7 days, and 90 days timer options. The new shortcut option is also introduced to enable it when creating a new group.
