On Friday, the weightlifter performed every other contender at the Commonwealth Championships at Tashkent, Uzbekistan. India has been relying on him ever since he clinched a gold at the 2018 Youth Olympics.
His personal best, however, came in 2019 where he lifted 306 kg (140kg+166kg) in the same category. With the win, the youngster also created a national record in the snatch event. He attempted to do the same for the clean and jerk section as well but could not lift the set target of 168 kg.
The World Championships are also being held simultaneously with the Commonwealth Championship and in that event, Lalrinnunga was placed 4th in snatch and 7th overall. It was a difficult comeback for him as earlier this year, the gold medalist had suffered a knee injury during the Asian Championships.
After some treatments, he participated in the Junior World Championship in May, which was a qualifying event for the Tokyo Olympics, but was unable to make the cut for the Indian squad to represent at the event.
Now that he has won the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, he has confirmed his qualification for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. It was previously announced that the gold medalist for each weight category will be getting direct entry to the 2022 CWG event and all others will be qualified through the Commonwealth rankings
