Was Rahul Gandhi’s Manipur Visit A Photo-Op, Vulture Tourism?

Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Manipur and his interaction with those affected by the ethnic clashes has sparked criticism from Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who accused him of engaging in “a vulture tourism” and being obsessed with photo opportunities.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Manipur to meet people affected by ethnic clashes has drawn criticism from Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar, who accused Gandhi of engaging in what he called “vulture tourism.”

This is usually done by some foreign reporters who only capture the slums, poverty and negative sides of India.

Chandrasekhar claimed that instead of addressing the long-standing issues in violence-affected societies, Gandhi visits places where people are suffering and turns it into a photo opportunity.

He further alleged that Gandhi finds satisfaction in such visits and then returns to his usual activities during his holidays in foreign countries.

Chandrasekhar’s remarks suggest that he believes Gandhi’s visits to troubled areas are insincere and aimed at gaining political mileage rather than addressing the underlying problems.

He criticized Gandhi for not contributing to resolving the decades-long tensions in societies that have been neglected under previous governments.

Chandrasekhar’s use of the term “vulture tourism” implies that Gandhi exploits the suffering of others for personal or political gain.

The Union Minister also criticized Rahul Gandhi’s foreign holidays as he used to fly for foreign holidays whenever he lost any election or faced any issue.

Gandhi, during his visit to Manipur, met with people affected by the ethnic clashes, talked with them and photographed with suffering people.

However, it is common for politicians to visit areas of unrest or conflict to assess the situation but there is no surety about Gandhi’s interpretations of his motives.
