A recent media report suggesting that the BCCI selectors might not consider Virat Kohli for the T20 World Cup in June this year has sparked a fierce debate in the cricket community. The report cited India’s failure to win an ICC trophy since 2013 as a potential reason for the selectors to make tough decisions, including leaving out the former captain.
Former Indian selector and opener Kris Srikkanth has strongly dismissed these reports as mere rumours, stating that India can’t go into the T20 World Cup without Virat Kohli. He pointed out Kohli’s exceptional performance in the 2022 T20 World Cup, where he was the top run-scorer for India with 296 runs in six innings.
Srikkanth emphasized Kohli’s vital role as a sheet anchor in the Indian batting lineup, saying, “You need a guy who can just stay there. India needs that sheet anchor, be it T20 World Cup or ODI World Cup. Without Virat Kohli, the Indian team cannot go.” He even suggested that the Indian team should win the World Cup for Kohli, just as the 2011 World Cup was dedicated to Sachin Tendulkar.
While the report states that the selectors believe Kohli hasn’t been at his best in the T20 format, Srikkanth believes that a strong performance from Kohli in the upcoming IPL season could force a rethink. Kohli recently took a break from the five-Test series against England to welcome the arrival of his second child.

Srikkanth emphasized the importance of experience and consistency in major tournaments like the World Cup. With Kohli’s vast experience and proven track record, his inclusion in the squad could provide stability and leadership to the Indian team. The debate around Kohli’s selection highlights the importance of striking the right balance between youth and experience in the team.
The debate surrounding Virat Kohli’s inclusion in India’s T20 World Cup squad has sparked a heated discussion among cricket fans and experts. While some reports suggest that the selectors might consider leaving him out, former players like Kris Srikkanth have strongly dismissed these claims, citing Kohli’s importance to the team’s success. As the tournament approaches, all eyes will be on the selectors’ final decision and Kohli’s performance in the IPL.
