Virat Kohli rested for T20 series against New Zealand, Rohit Sharma to take charge

New Zealand– Rohit Sharma will be taking over the T20 squad against New Zealand after Virat Kohli has been announced to rest. India is gearing up for the upcoming series which will prove to be immensely crucial for the team given a disappointing show at the T20 World Cup.

The Indian side has made an official exit from the ongoing World Cup after its match against Namibia where people saw Virat Kohli get emotional in front of other team members. Post the match, Kohli took to social media to thank fans for their support and also added that he was disappointed with the recent performance.

India won the match against Namibia in the last call of the super 12 fixture in Dubai but despite its best efforts in the last three matches, it failed to make it to the semi-finals. Their fate depended on Sunday’s match between Afghanistan and New Zealand which the latter won.

Not only was the skipper seen as emotional about the early exit, many Indians were also left heartbroken after the exit. This made the 33-year-old take to Twitter to say, “Together as one we set out to achieve our goal. Unfortunately, we fell short and no one is more disappointed than us as an aside.

The skipper also thanked everyone for showering the team with support for which all of the team is grateful. The selection committee has selected a 16-member team for the upcoming series. It will be witnessing KL Rahul for the position of vice-captain while Sharma will be taking the lead.

The series is scheduled to start on November 17, 2021. This is the first time Kohli has been rested post the announcement of him stepping down from the captaincy for the shorter format. Other changes that were made in the team included the inclusion of leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and pacer Mohammed Siraj.
