The voting process for the selection of the Vice President of India started at 10 am today (6th Aug). Voting will continue till 5 pm. The counting will start after that.
The election for vice president is now open for voting. The voting process began with the first vote of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The country’s new vice president will be chosen on Saturday by members of both chambers of parliament.
Jagdeep Dhankhar of the NDA and Margaret Alva of the opposition are vying for the role. Given the NDA’s dominance in both chambers, Dhankhar’s victory is seen as merely a formality.
Amit Shah, the home minister, Prahlad Joshi, Rajiv Chandrashekhar, and Jyotiraditya Scindia, the union ministers, all voted in the vice presidential election in Delhi.
Jitendra Singh & Ashwini Vaishnav, both Union ministers, are also voted for the vice president in the Parliament.
Speaking of both candidates, 71-year-old Dhankhar is a former BJP leader and a member of Rajasthan’s Jat ethnic group. Before being selected as a vice presidential candidate, he served as the Governor of West Bengal.
At the same time, Margaret Alva, an opposition candidate who is 80 years old and a former senior Congress leader, is from Karnataka. The current vice president, M. Venkaiah Naidu, will leave office on 10th Aug.
The total number of members in both chambers of parliament is 788. In the Rajya Sabha, there are currently 8 open seats.
Each member’s vote has a value of one. So, out of 780 votes, the winner will be the one who receives 391 votes. In the Lok Sabha, the BJP has 303 representatives, while in the Rajya Sabha, it has 91.

This indicates that the BJP is capable of ensuring the victory of its candidate without the aid of any other group. There is also a vote among the nominees.
Today’s voting hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The votes will then be counted after that. Only on August 6 will the results be released. August 11 will see the swearing-in of the next vice president.
