US Assistant Secy of State Praises Indian Navy, Lauds India-US Relations

Geoffrey R Pyatt, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources, praised the Indian Navy for its action against the Houthis. He said this shows India’s strength in providing security in the region, which also helps the United States.

Pyatt was answering a question about the relationship between India and the US in energy security during global challenges. He talked about the current troubles in international shipping and its effect on inflation.

He highlighted an incident where the Indian Navy saved a US cargo ship that was attacked by a Houthi missile. This action, according to Pyatt, proves India’s role as a significant security provider.

Regarding trade agreements between the US and India, Pyatt mentioned that there are no current free trade agreement negotiations. However, there are ongoing talks to improve the trade relationship.

He explained this in a cool way, he said that these relations cannot be simply described as a ‘Chapati’, which is flat. Instead, the India-US relations have now become like a ‘Puri’, which is big and puffed up (grown and expanded).

Pyatt also talked about his recent visit to India. He mentioned the iCET framework, a key part of India-US cooperation in high technology areas.

The framework now includes critical minerals and clean energy technology. This addition aims to speed up collaboration in innovation areas.

In his meeting with Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Pyatt discussed various topics. They talked about energy security, the stability of global energy markets, and the impacts of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.

They also covered issues around the Red Sea, Iran, and Venezuela. Both the US and India are working together to manage disruptions in global oil markets and provide energy to their citizens with the least carbon footprint.

Pyatt was in India from January 26 to 31. He visited New Delhi and Hyderabad and spoke at the India-US Forum. The discussions focused on shared energy priorities and challenges around critical minerals for global energy transition.

The US State Department stated that the visit emphasized the importance of bilateral energy cooperation. The US and India both acknowledged the increasing role of their energy trade and the successes of the US-India Strategic Clean Energy Partnership (SCEP).

This partnership is important for energy security, clean energy innovation, climate change solutions, and job creation.

India and the US have a strong partnership in various areas, backed by shared democratic values, common interests, and strong people-to-people connections.
