During a virtual meeting with representatives from British High Commission, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh invited United Kingdom to explore opportunities for business investment in India’s northeastern region. He said that India and UK can enter into a “mutually rewarding relationship”, adding that “intricately woven bonds” will make collaboration easier and more natural.

Singh highlighted that Northeast India has a pivotal role in strengthening relations with ASEAN countries with it being a gateway to trade and business opportunities with the economies in region. He added that improvement in region’s connectivity through rail, road and air along with sorting out of the Indo-Bangladesh issues has “cleared the decks” for business investments in the region. He said that a train would soon be launched that will connect Tripura with Bangladesh. This will enable access of entire region to seaports.

British officials have offered their keen interest to brand the region’s handicraft, fruit, vegetables and spices in the global market. Singh lauded and welcomed the proposal by British Council for collaborating in the education sector, teaching science and mathematics in all the eight northeastern states. MoU will soon be signed with the North Eastern Council taking collaboration to a new high.

“India and Britain are capable of a mutually rewarding business relationship because of their shared commonalities at different levels, including cultural, social and linguistic,” Singh said. Mr. Singh said that under the leadership of Honorary Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the northeastern region of India has made remarkable progress in last six years overcoming various lapses of the past. This has instilled new confidence in the people. Furthermore, PM Modi’s change of policy from ‘Look East’ to ‘Act East’ has taken the cooperation at multinational level to new level.
