UN Almost Failed To Convince Taliban In Afghanistan, Plans To Leave

The Taliban has prohibited all females from education & employment since taking power in August 2021. Now the UN is planning to withdraw from Afghanistan.

The United Nations (UN) is in negotiations with the Taliban to allow local women to work for the organization in Afghanistan.

If the Taliban does not permit women to work for the UN, the organization will withdraw from Afghanistan in May, according to the head of the UN Development Program, Achin Steiner.

The Taliban has imposed bans on all girls & women, preventing them from education and employment since it came to power in Afghanistan in August 2021.

A decree was issued that prohibited Afghan women from higher education and working with national and international NGOs, in December 2022.

The UN expressed “serious concerns” after female national UN staff were banned from reporting to work in Nangarhar province.

The organization warned that without female staff, life-saving aid would be at risk since most of its staff are female.

The UN and other international organizations have repeatedly expressed their concerns about excluding women from the aid sector, saying that it will make it difficult to reach needy women.

The Taliban’s suppression of women and girls has been met with massive criticism by national and international organizations, warning that it will disrupt the delivery of humanitarian aid to those in need in Afghanistan.

The UN’s negotiating with the Taliban is aimed at making exceptions to the decree prohibiting local women from working for the organization, while the Taliban’s stance on this issue remains unclear.

Achin Steiner stated that the UN’s negotiations with the Taliban are not about negotiating human rights & fundamental principles.

He added that the entire UN system is re-evaluating its ability to operate in Afghanistan, given the situation.

The UN’s warning about withdrawing from Afghanistan demonstrates its commitment to upholding the rights of women and ensuring that its operations can continue effectively.

The UN’s negotiations with the Taliban over allowing local women to work for the organization in Afghanistan is a critical issue that will affect the delivery of humanitarian aid to the most vulnerable people in the country.

If the Taliban does not permit women to work for the UN, the organization will withdraw from Afghanistan, a decision that underscores its commitment to upholding the rights of women and the effectiveness of its operations.

The UN may lose all its value from the entire world, if the Taliban or any organization is not ready to obey them, even for the fundamental human rights..
