Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi is an auspicious festival celebrated across India. It marks the beginning of the five-day Deepavali festival. On this day, people buy valuable items like gold, silver and utensils – that are believed to attract prosperity into the home.
There appears to be a lot of confusion about the date of Dhanteras. The festival is just around the corner and let’s put an end to the question for once and for all. In India, Dhanteras is falling on October 29, a Tuesday.
Dhanteras is the day of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kubera. Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi should be done during Pradosh Kaal – essentially after sunset. This period lasts for around 2 hours and 24 minutes.

The history and significance of the auspicious Dhanteras festival can be easily traced back to ancient Hindu mythology and tradition. The legend is that on the day of Dhantrayodashi, Goddesses Lakshmi came out of the ocean.
Dhanteras holds significant cultural and spiritual importance. It is a highly auspicious day to make fresh beginnings and to purchase gold and silver. Lakshmi Puja on amavasya after a couple of days of Dhantrayodashi is considered more important.
