UK To Initiate India-Britain Young Professionals Exchange Scheme

The British Foreign Secretary launched ‘Young Professionals Scheme’ which will allow young professionals to live & work in each other’s country for up to 2 years.

In addition to attending the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly is in India to promote a new programme that will allow young people from the UK and India to live and work in each other’s countries for up to two years. The programme was launched by the Home Secretary earlier this week.

Foreign Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will meet Cleverly on Wednesday, ahead of the G-20 foreign ministers’ gathering in New Delhi. They are anticipated to talk about the UK-India 2030 Roadmap, which intends to strengthen the two nations’ cooperation in the areas of commerce, investment, and defense.

Cleverly will officially launch the Young Professionals Scheme, a cooperation between the UK and India that gives up to 3,000 British people and 3,000 Indians the opportunity to live and work in the other nation for up to two years, during a trip to IIT Delhi on Wednesday.

He will also reveal the appointment of the first UK Tech Envoy to the Indo-Pacific region, whose first objective will be strengthening connections with India.

According to a statement from the British High Commission, “This envoy is the 2nd of this type to be announced by the UK (following the appointment of a Tech Ambassador to the US in late 2020) and reflects our commitment to the area and tech-diplomacy.” In 2020, the UK will send Joe White to San Francisco as its first Tech Envoy.

According to the announcement, the new Tech Envoy’s position will strengthen the UK’s position as a superpower in research and technology.

“India is a vitally important partner to the UK, and the stronger linkages we are creating now will help to expand the UK economy and enhance our industries for the future,” said Cleverly in a statement.

The smartest and brightest in both countries will be able to take advantage of new opportunities thanks to this historic immigration policy.”

“India is also a fast-rising technological power, and there is enough potential for us to work together more effectively in this area. To fully use both nations’ technological prowess, we will be deploying our first Tech Envoy to the Indo-Pacific area.”

The British High Commission claimed that with 108 start-ups attaining the unicorn classification of a private company valued at over $1 billion,

India has the third-highest number of tech unicorns and start-ups worldwide. This declaration, according to the statement, “illustrates the UK’s clear commitment to enhancing partnerships in India and throughout South Asia.”

Cleverly will join colleagues to strengthen international efforts on food and energy security, climate change, and development at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting on Thursday.

The repercussions of the heightened food insecurity would still be seen in 2027 even if the war ended today, according to the statement.

Cleverly will also speak at a business conference between India and Europe in the city where he will reiterate the UK’s intention to sign a free trade agreement with India.

The UK-India trade partnership, which has more linkages than nearly any other nation in the Indo-Pacific, is already worth £34 billion and has increased by £10 billion in just one year.
