On Thursday, July 27, 2023, the leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), Uddhav Thackeray, responded to rumors that he and his estranged cousin Raj Thackeray, who is the founder-president of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), would work together by denying the rumors.
There is no such discussion taking place at this time. In the second part of his interview with Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, which took place today on the occasion of Mr. Thackeray’s 63rd birthday, Mr. Thackeray stated that there is no need to speculate in this vein.
Recently, following the announcement that a faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Ajit Pawar would be joining the ruling coalition of the BJP and Shiv Sena led by Devendra Fadnavis and Eknath Shinde, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) began a signature campaign across the state, asking the general public to express their outrage over recent political developments in which political leaders routinely compromised their ideologies for the sake of power.
In the early 2000s, Bal Thackeray, the founder of Shiv Sena, was the uncle of Raj Thackeray, the founder of MNS. Raj Thackeray was a major leader in Shiv Sena and Bal Thackeray’s nephew. But their relationship started to get worse when Raj Thackeray said he wanted to take a more aggressive stance on some issues and play a bigger role in the party.
In 2006, Raj Thackeray and the Shiv Sena leadership couldn’t agree on anything anymore. This caused a big split in the party. Raj Thackeray made the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), which is his own political party. The split was nasty, and MNS became Shiv Sena’s rival in the area.
Since then, Shiv Sena and MNS have been fierce rivals in the politics of Maharashtra, especially when it comes to issues about the rights and welfare of people who speak Marathi. Both parties have been fighting for the same group of voters, which has led to tough elections in the state.
Over time, the political scene has changed, and both parties’ strategies and alliances have changed. In the past, they have sometimes held hands during elections, which led to rumours of a possible reunification, but nothing major has come of it.

Shiv Sena and MNS kept competing with each other as they fought for different political spaces in Maharashtra, which has a complex and changing political scene. But political dynamics and events can change, and right now, the MNS and Shiv Sena are not on the same side because the Shiv Sena is weaker and the NCP is also in disarray.
