The northeastern state of India, Tripura, known for its lush green tea gardens, is making headlines with its ambitious plans to brand its tea at a national level. This move by the Tripura Government aims to give Tripura Tea a significant identity across the country.
Tripura boasts 54 large tea gardens and around 2800 tea growers. Now, when it comes to its position in the national tea market, Tripura tea is ranked 5th. This is quite an achievement, considering the competition from well-known tea-producing regions like Assam and Darjeeling.
The Tripura Tea Development Corporation (TTDC) is leading the charge in this branding mission. They are focused on giving Tripura Tea a distinct and recognized presence throughout Bharat. But how are they planning to do it?
Well, one of their strategies is education. Samir Ranjan Ghosh, the Chairman of TTDC, has mentioned that they plan to introduce a certificate course in tea plantation management.
This course, which includes six months of theory and six months of practical training, will be available at MBB University. It’s a great way to attract the younger, educated generation into the tea industry.
Another significant step taken by the Tripura Tea Development Authority is including tea in the public distribution system, also known as ration. This move is expected to lower the cost of tea and make it more accessible to a broader range of people.
Now, let’s talk about international ambitions. The Tripura Tea Board is keen on exporting tea to Bangladesh. There’s a plan for a barter system where Tripura would exchange tea for Bangladeshi Hilda fish. This is a strategic move, especially considering Bangladesh’s current tea imports from countries like Sri Lanka.
Tea tourism is another exciting initiative. With 54 large tea gardens in the state, the government is exploring the potential of attracting tourists to these scenic locations.

Places like Durga Tea Estate near Agartala are already set up with bungalows for tourists. The idea is to blend the experience of tea with the charm of tourism, which could be a unique attraction for both domestic and international visitors.
While Assam and Darjeeling teas have long been known since the 19th century, Tripura tea, with its indigenous development and different heritage, is now set to carve its niche in the national market.
