In a significant development, the Election Commission (EC) has taken action by ordering the removal of West Bengal’s Director General of Police, Rajeev Kumar. However, the decision has sparked reactions from various political quarters, with Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kunal Ghosh questioning the motives behind the move.
Ghosh criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), suggesting that the removal of Rajeev Kumar reflects the ruling party’s growing influence over institutions like the Election Commission. He expressed concerns that the BJP is attempting to manipulate various organizations, including the EC, to serve its political agenda.
Despite the EC’s decision, Ghosh exuded confidence in TMC’s strength and popularity among the public. He asserted that the BJP’s organizational capabilities in West Bengal are lacking and emphasized TMC’s determination to emerge victorious in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

On the other hand, the Election Commission clarified that Kumar’s removal is part of its efforts to ensure a fair electoral process. By seeking his replacement, the EC aims to maintain impartiality and integrity in the electoral machinery.
Rajeev Kumar’s tenure has been marred by controversies, especially his alleged involvement in the Saradha scam investigation. His close ties to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have also raised eyebrows, leading to clashes with central agencies like the CBI in the past.
Apart from Kumar, the EC’s action extended to other states and officials, indicating a broader effort to uphold electoral standards across the country. The removal of home secretaries and municipal commissioners underscores the EC’s commitment to neutrality and fairness in the electoral process. In conclusion, the Election Commission’s decision to remove Rajeev Kumar has stirred both political debate and administrative scrutiny. While TMC sees it as a manifestation of BJP’s influence, the EC maintains that it’s a step towards ensuring a level playing field in elections.
