As a democratic country, India has a vast number of political parties, some of which have gained widespread popularity and support. There are over 1800 national and state level parties.

1) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is an Indian national political party founded in 1980. In 1951, Syama Prasad Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh.

Following the 1975 emergency, it unified with other parties to become the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee, LK Advani were among the prominent BJP leaders. Now PM Narendra Modi, and Amit Shah are the faces of BJP.

This party has gained lots of popularity, love, and support from the entire India as well as several countries in the world.

2) All India Anna Dramuka Kazhagam (AIADMK)

M.G Ramachandran, a senior and prominent Tamil film industry figure, founded AIADMK in 1972 as a breakaway wing of the parent organization Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

The party is one of two important Dravidian political parties in India, with a mass base mostly in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.

3) Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)

In 2012, the Aam Aadmi Party was created. The AAP government was twice elected to rule the Delhi territory.

This party was an outcome of the protests of Anna Hajarey & his followers against the Congress (contemporaneous ruling party). Later Arwind Kejriwal decided to form a political party.

The rise of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi’s political ambience resulted in a crushing defeat of the Indian National Congress (INC).

4) Shiv Sena

Balasaheb Thackeray founded this Maharashtra-based political party in the year 1966. It received 18 Members of Parliament in the 16th Lok Sabha Election.

This party has a large national and state following. The Shiv Sena’s highly dedicated volunteers are known as ‘Shiv Sainiks.’

The symbol of this party is ‘Bow and Arrow’. Shiv Sena is also represented by a symbol of ‘tiger & map of Maharashtra’.

5) Biju Janata Dal (BJD)

This is an Odisha-based political party that was founded in 1997. This party won 20 seats in Parliament in the 16th Lok Sabha election.

Navin Patnaik, the current Chief Minister of Odisha, now leads the BJD, confirming the party’s victory in 2014. In the state of Odisha, this party has a large following.

6) Indian National Congress (INC)

Indian National Congress was the only party during or after the partition of India-Pakistan. This party was founded with the support & guidance of a British civil servant named Allan Octavian Hume in 1885.

It used to be the 2nd most powerful party in the country. But it has been continuously losing its position for the last few years.

7) Communist Party of India (CPI)

On December 26, 1925, the CPI, India’s oldest communist party, was founded in Kanpur. Corn ears and a sickle are its symbols.

The first General Secretary of the CPI was S.V. Ghate. CPI began operating legally in 1942. In its initial days it addressed workers’ issues with the help of the country’s trade unions.
