India has a literacy rate of 74 percent in total that is up by 12 percent from what was recorded in 1947. Both education and literacy are important indicators of social and economic development of a society in general. These two play an important role in human development.

Pondicherry has a very high literacy rate of 85.85 percent where males have a literacy rate of 91.26 percent and females have 80.67 percent. It previously occupied the 8th position but rose to 7th before slipping down to 10th position. The union territory has a competent representation of French culture and education.
In 9th position we have the city of Chandigarh in Punjab. Compared to the 2001 census it has increased to 4.49% and has a literacy rate of 86.05% overall, where men have 89.99% and females have 81.19% literacy rate.
The Indian capital has a literacy rate of 86.34% overall, an increase of 4.67 percent from the 2001 census. Men have a 90.94% and women have a 80.74% literacy rate.
According to the 2011 Indian census Andaman and Nicobar Islands, another Indian UT, has a literacy rate of 86.63%. But now it has a literacy rate of 86.27%. Men have 90.27% while women have a literacy rate of 82.43%.
Another Union Territory in the list, Daman & Diu has a literacy rate of 87.10%. Compared to the 2001 census, the literacy rate has grown by 8.89%, quite a significant increase in the number. For males the literacy rate is 91.54% while for females it is 79.55 percent.

It was previously placed at 13th position in the nation’s most educated states, Tripura has an overall literacy rate of 87.75% up 14.56% if compared to the census of 2001.
According to the data of census of 2011, Goa has a literacy rate of 88.70% overall, while in males it has 92.65 percent while in females it is 84.66%.
Mizoram has an overall education rate of 91.33%, males having 93.35% of literacy rate while females have 89.27%. This is as per 2011 census data.
Having an overall literacy rate of 91.85% it ranks the second highest place in India in terms of literacy rate with males having 95.56% and females at 87.95%.
Kerala comes first in India in terms of literacy and education. It has a staggering 94% overall in terms of literacy with males having 96.11% and females having a high rate of 92.07%.
