TN elections: Owaisi’s AIMIM teams up with Dhinakaran‘s AMMK, alliance likely to hit BJP

On Monday, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi announced forming an alliance with the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK). The newly-formed coalition allowed the Hyderabad-MP to contest for Tamil Nadu assembly elections from three seats — Vaniyambadi, Sankarapuram, and Krishnagiri. The news of the electoral pact between the two parties was made public by AMMK’s member, TTV Dhinakaran on Twitter.

Many observers believed that Dhinakaran-Owaisi tie-up was a saving move for both the parties for Tamil Nadu assembly elections. Dhinakaran was already late in forming any alliance with any of the established political parties and AIMIM would provide him the much needed support, he needed especially with the official exit of his aunt V K Sasikala from politics. Whereas for Owaisi, it was a good deal too as AIMIM doesn’t have presence in Tamil Nadu and was also struggling to find a good ally to contest the elections.

In his search for electoral partner, Qwaisi held talks with various parties ranging from MK Stalin’s Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) to Kamal Haasan’s MNM (Makkal Needhi Maiam). But he finally settled the deal with Dhinakaran‘s AMMK, which allotted All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen with three seats, all of which are known for their significant Muslim population.

Qwaisi’s entry into Tamil Nadu assembly elections could prove to be a huge deterrent to BJP, which would even benefit the opposition DMK. DMK formed an alliance with Congress. In a recent seat-sharing deal, DMK decided to allot 25 seats to Congress to beat both the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and its ally BJP.

With regard to the recent alliance, Dinesh Gundu Rao, the Congress leader in-charge of Tamil Nadu said, “BJP by entering into an alliance with AIADMK, its intention is to finish off AIADMK. They want to kill all opposition parties and have ‘one party-one man rule’ in the country. Congress, DMK, Left, VCK will sweep these elections”.
