TN elections: EC declares polling for Velachery constituency void, orders repolling

On Tuesday, the Election Commission of India declared the voting held in the Velachery Assembly constituency as void, as three corporation workers were seen carrying two EVMs and one VVPAT machine. As soon as the complaint of the corporation employees carrying the voting machines on a two-wheeler was reported, EC ordered for investigation and repolling in ward no 92 in Velachery. 

With regard to the incident, Election Commission released the statement saying, “On the basis of the report of Returning Officer, Observers and taking all material circumstances into account, the Commission hereby declares under Section 58 (1)(b) of the Representation of the People Acr, 1951 that the poll was taken on 6th April at polling No 92 of 26 Velachery Assembly constituency to be void.”

People saw three employees of the Greater Chennai Corporation taking two EVMs and a VVPAT machine on two-wheelers on April 6, after the voting was wrapped up in the state. The authorities added that soon after the incident was reported an inquiry was conducted and employees involved in the incident were suspended. Besides, the election officials said that 15 votes were found to be recorded on VVPA machine where as the EVMs machines didn’t seem to be used for the polling.

EC said that the repolling would be held on April 17, between 7 am and 7 pm. Election Commission of India Secretary Malay Mallick said that they would tighten up the security in the area and would make all the required security arrangements at the voting booth to ensure that the re-voting happens in a free and peaceful manner.
