Instagram chief Adam Mosseri has stated that the new Threads app will not encourage typical news or political discussions, suggesting that it will not compete with Twitter in terms of content.
Mosseri believes that the engagement and revenue generated by these topics would not be worth the integrity and security risks.
He clarified that Threads’ goal is not to replace Twitter but to create a less angry place for conversations on Instagram. However politics and hard news may show up on Threads, but the platform will not actively encourage such content.
Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has been moving away from news and is taking steps to prevent users from seeing multiple political posts in a row.
Despite this, major publications such as The Wall Street Journal, CNN, and BBC have already established a presence on Threads, and discussions about politics and hard news are already taking place.
However, it is likely that most users who try Threads are not interested in typical news content and see it as a way to stay connected with friends and family rather than a political platform.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has clearly stated that the Threads app is not intended for news and politics. In a conversation with The Verge, Mosseri explained that politics and hard news bring too much scrutiny, negativity, and risks to the app’s integrity.
Mosseri believes that Threads should focus on vibrant communities centered around sports, music, fashion, beauty, and entertainment, rather than getting involved in politics.
This perspective is influenced by Meta’s efforts to distance itself from news and politics and reduce the promotion of questionable content.
Mosseri clarified that Threads will not discourage news and politics, but they won’t actively seek them out like Facebook has done in the past.
The app aims to create a positive space for conversations and communities that may not be drawn to Twitter.
Threads has already received over 7 crore users, but it differs from Twitter as it only offers an algorithmic feed featuring celebrities and brands.
