Terrorist and Kashmiri separatist Yasin Malik gets 2 life terms for terror funding

Yasin Malik, the chief of JKLF (Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front) and a terrorist, has been given 2 terms of life sentences on Wednesday by NIA (National Investigation Agency) court in Delhi. The sentence has been given in relation to the 2017 terror funding case.

The trial

Trial of Yasin Malik took place in court of special NIA judge Praveen Singh. Giving sentence to the 56 year old terrorist, judge Singh said, “The convict may have given up the gun in 1994, but never expressed any regret for violence committed prior to 1994 and still remained engaged in violent acts.”

He added, “The offences committed were of a very serious nature, and intended to strike at the heart of the idea of India and to forcefully secede J&K from the Union of India.”

Court rejects Malik’s contention of “Gandhian Principle”

Judge Singh’s court rejected Malik’s contention that he was following Gandhian Principle of non-violence after he put down arms in 1994 and neither condemned violence in Valley nor left the protests.

“Rather, betraying the good intentions of government he took a different path to orchestrate violence in the guise of political struggle. The convict claimed that he had followed the Gandhian principle of non-violence and was spearheading a peaceful non-violent struggle. However, the evidence on the basis of which charges were framed and to which convict has pleaded guilty, speaks otherwise,” the judge said.

“The entire movement (led by Malik) was planned to be a violent movement and large-scale violence ensued is a matter of fact,” he noted.
