“Tendulkar’s record is very achievable,” Mark Taylor’s huge Joe Root’s prediction

On Sunday, England’s Joe Root was the toast of the cricketing world after his superb unbeaten century helped the hosts beat New Zealand by five wickets in the first Test at Lord’s, giving England a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Root also joined a select group of players who have scored 10,000 runs in the longest format, joining Alastair Cook as the joint-youngest to do so. Following Joe Root’s heroics at Lord’s, praise for the Englishman flooded in from all corners of the globe. Former Australia captain Mark Taylor was as effusive in his comments, even suggesting that Root may very likely break Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time Test cricket record of 15,921 runs.

“Root has minimum five years left in him, so I think Tendulkar’s record is very achievable,” Said Mark Taylor during an interview with Sky Sports.

“Root is batting as well as I have ever seen him bat over the last 18 months to two years. He is in the prime of his career, so there are 15,000 runs-plus for him if he stays healthy,” former Australian skipper said while praising Root.

Nasser Hussain, a former England captain, said of Root, “He has always looked like a world-class talent. His technique is mostly unchanged; he plays with a consistent rhythm and fluency. He still has a lot of runs left in him.”

“(Reaching 10,000 Test runs) is a wonderful day for him, and one he richly deserves following the last couple of years as England captain – Covid, bubble life, and losing Test matches,” he added.

Root became the 14th player and only the second Englishman after Cook to attain the milestone. In his 218th innings, he became the fastest England hitter to achieve the 10,000-run mark. In his 229th inning, Cook had surpassed the 10,000-run mark.
