Telangana Polls 2023: 35 Defector BRS Leaders Join Congress

Telangana citizens were shocked when 35 leaders of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), led by Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, defected to the Congress party.

The leaders, including former MP Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and former minister Jupally Krishna Rao, formally joined the Congress in the presence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Rahul Gandhi at the AICC office in Delhi.

The event was attended by senior Congress leaders KC Venugopal and A Revanth Reddy as well.

The list of defectors includes prominent figures such as –

  • Former Lok Sabha MP Gurnath Reddy,
  • Former MLA and Zila Parishad Chairman Koram Kanakaiah,
  • Former MLA Payam Venkateshwarlu,
  • Ex-chairman of District Cooperative Central Bank (DCCB) Muvament Vijaya Baby,
  • Current DCCB Chairman Thulluri Bramhaiah,
  • Former chairman of SC Corporation Pidamarthi Ravi,
  • Borra Rajshekhar (Markfed state Vice Chairperson),
  • Municipal Chairperson Warya,
  • Mandal Praja Parishad Chairman S. Jaipal,

and several other senior BRS leaders.

The Congress party hailed this move as a significant boost to its prospects in Telangana, stating that more and more people are aligning with the party.

The defection comes ahead of the Telangana Assembly elections in the state later this year, as the Congress seeks to challenge the ruling BRS, which has held power in Telangana for nearly a decade.

Today, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) visited the Vitthal Rukmini temple in Pandharpur, Maharashtra, ahead of the Ashadhi Ekadashi festival.

Accompanied by his cabinet colleagues, KCR’s visit to the pilgrimage town attracted attention, especially after Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) leaders questioned his intentions in making a push into Maharashtra.

MVA leaders expressed concerns that KCR’s activities in Maharashtra could undermine the opposition’s unity against the BJP.

Telangana Chief Minister KCR and his cabinet members made a grand visit to a temple in a motorcade of 600 vehicles.

This temple yatra is being seen as a significant step in the current political situation, indicating KCR’s religious intentions and potential alliances beyond Telangana.
