Tarang Shakti will be the greatest exercise the Air Force has ever held in India. It’s going to be a large event where many air forces from different nations get together to train and help each other by showing their skills. Think of it as a big, friendly get-together for the different air forces to come and show each other what they can do.
The exercise has been bifurcated into two phases to enable the occurrence of training amongst such diverse participants. The first phase is scheduled for August in Sulur, Tamil Nadu. The second phase will be held in September and the venue will shift to Jodhpur, Rajasthan. This split allows participation that is spread out in time and across geographical challenges.
This would involve 18 countries in all in this mammoth exercise. Of these, 10 will participate actively with their aircraft. The first phase will have Germany, France, Spain, and the UK participating in it. The second phase will also see countries like Australia, Bangladesh, Greece, Singapore, UAE, and the USA among others. The varied participation proves the global significance of the event.
The skies over Sulur and Jodhpur will be abuzz with activity during Tarang Shakti. More than 150 aircraft will take part in the exercise, involving foreign and Indian aircraft. Each phase is likely to witness 70-80 aircraft at a time grand treat in terms of firepower and coordination.
India has manifold objectives behind this huge exercise:
• To promote international cooperation among air forces
• Knowledge sharing and learning
• The event showcases India’s capability of indigenously developed aerospace and defense.
It’s not just the flying exercise, a large exposition on indigenously developed military equipment will also be part of Tarang Shakti. As far as this expo is concerned, it would display fast-growing India in the defense sector, with Indian companies coming up with their innovations. The Indian Air Force would, of course, highlight the indigenous aircraft—Light Combat Aircraft—and national strides toward self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing.
Though Tarang Shakti is the biggest ever in terms of its magnitude of exercise, it is not the maiden international air exercise that India has undertaken. Since 2001, India has participated in 91 international air exercises out of which 32 were hosted by it. This valuable experience has been garnered to host an exercise on the scale and magnitude of Tarang Shakti.
Tarang Shakti means much more than a military exercise; it is a geopolitical step by India to assert its presence on the global platform. The exercise aims at building strong relations with other nations, improving interoperability between air forces, and exhibiting an emerging India in defense manufacturing.
Not an event in itself, it also allows space for cultural exchange between nations and furthers diplomatic ties beyond military cooperation. India has made a big stride toward establishing itself as a crucial player in international defense collaborations and as a host state with the capability to execute complex, large-scale military events.
