Tamil Nadu increases border checks as Nipah virus hits Kerala

Tamil Nadu has increased strictness in border areas after the news of a 12-year-old kid’s demise because of the Nipah virus disease in Kozhikode, Kerala. The health authorities in Tamil Nadu are checking people who come from Kerala. Eleven people that came in contact with Kerala’s most recent Nipah virus died a day before yesterday.

Nipah Virus is a zoonotic disease transmitted from animals to people, pigs and fruit bats and can likewise be transmitted through tainted food or straight from person to person.

Authorities from the district health and animal husbandry department gathered swap tests from a raised goat that had come in contact with the dead and discover the source of the disease.

On Sunday, Tamil Nadu minister for health and family welfare Ma Subramanian had said: “As of now, we have been checking the nine districts that are on the border of Kerala, LiveMint reported. 

We have been leading the house-to-house awareness campaign in the locale on the spread of the Zika infection, and to track the Nipah infection, we have issued a warning to district health officials to expedite measures like holding fever camps.”

“We are consistently checking individuals who enter Tamil Nadu. Individuals need not get panicked about the Nipah virus spread; however, they ought not to be careless in following rules,” he advised. 

On Monday, Kerala health minister Veena George stated, “What’s more important right now is to strengthen contact tracing. There can be more contacts. We followed 188 contacts yesterday. We are giving special training to our field officers to find the source of the infection.

The Union Health Ministry has suggested reinforcing medical clinics and local area-based surveillance to do intensive contact tracing. As per the state government, all adjoining Kozhikode have been placed on high alert.
