One of India’s best shot putters, Tajinderpal Singh Toor has qualified for Tokyo Olympics scheduled to be held starting July this year. With the confirmation of berth, the athlete has also set a new national record.
Toor managed a throw of 21.49 meters, breaking the previous national record, and hence was able to clear the qualification mark for Olympics which was 21.10 meters. Another highlight of the Indian Grand Prix was that the talented athletes decided to dedicate their performance to the late track and field great Milkha Singh.
While dedicating the award, he said, “Milkha sir showed India what is needed to reach an Olympic final. Hopefully, I too can do that in Tokyo.”
The shot putter is extremely close to his mother and as soon as the announcement was confirmed, he first and foremost shared the news with his mother back home in his village Khosa Pando. The 26-year-old athlete not only broke the national record but also asian record at the tournament.
“It feels special to break the national and Asian record with the first throw of the competition to book the spot for Tokyo Olympics,” he said. He broke Asian record in his first throw itself when he reached 21.49 meters, which also made him make a cut at the 32-thrower field at the games.
He talked about training during the pandemic saying that it was all about sitting at home and training alone. He asserted that with this record, it has released a lot of pressure above himself as now the Olympic dilemma has been cracked. Other than that he also shared that because of the pandemic, even his wedding was canceled and even this year it was delayed but his family members continued to show faith in him.
He talked to a leading daily sharing that the delay in the Olympics was a huge mental setback for him as his family motivated him to stay focused on improving himself and my performance. He explained that during the halt, he had gained weight and was unmotivated but then he thought about his coach MS Dhillon who also was away from his family due to his training.
