The Swachh Suvekshan 2023 has ranked the cleanest cities in our nation. Indore and Surat have once again secured the top positions as the cleanest cities in India.
This marks the 7th consecutive year that Indore has earned this honor. Navi Mumbai also maintained its impressive third position in this annual cleanliness survey conducted by the Central government.
The states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh have been recognized as the best-performing states in terms of cleanliness.
The prestigious award ceremony was graced by President Droupadi Murmu, along with the presence of Union housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri and other dignitaries.
In a special category for urban centers with a population of less than 1 lakh, Saswad, located in Maharashtra, received the cleanest city award.
Patan in Chhattisgarh and Lonavla in Maharashtra secured the second and third positions in this category. Additionally, Varanasi and Prayagraj were recognized as the cleanest Ganga towns.
This cleanliness survey, known as Swachh Survekshan, has been conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs since 2016.
It has played a vital role in fostering healthy competition among our towns and cities, motivating them to improve their services and create cleaner urban environments.
Over the years, the survey has expanded significantly, now covering 4,477 cities across our nation. The theme for this year’s survey was ‘Waste to Wealth,’ emphasizing the importance of effective waste management.
Indore’s remarkable success is attributed to its sustainable waste management system, reducing waste generation and promoting the ‘3 R’ concept (reduce, reuse, and recycle). The Indore city has banned single-use plastic, further contributing to its cleanliness.
Indore’s dedication to waste management includes sorting and processing waste from households and commercial establishments, producing bio-CNG and organic fertilizers, and powering city buses with bio-CNG.
