The Supreme Court will hear the plea on 28th April, of some wrestlers for sexual harassment case against the President of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).
The upcoming hearing at the Supreme Court regarding the wrestlers’ sexual harassment complaints against WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has garnered significant attention.
The petitioners have expressed their doubts about receiving justice from the government or the police, given that Singh is a ruling BJP MP.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal has stated that the police are not taking any action, and even police personnel could be prosecuted for failing to register an FIR. The CJI has acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and issued a notice to the Delhi Police.
Top wrestlers, including Olympic medallists, have petitioned the court for the registration of a case against Singh and have turned down the sports ministry’s call for negotiations.
The wrestlers have been sitting on a protest after their repeated attempts to convince the Delhi Police to register an FIR on their April 21 complaint did not yield results.
The wrestlers have mentioned their plea through senior advocate Narendra Hooda before a bench headed by the CJI for an urgent hearing.
The petitioners have made it clear that they do not expect justice from the government or the police, given that Singh is a ruling party MP.
They have called for the registration of an FIR on the complaints that stretch from 2012 until last year.
The wrestlers have urged all political parties and khap panchayats to support them and have emphasized the need to keep the protests apolitical.
The Union sports ministry has issued an order directing the Indian Olympic Association to form a transitory or ad hoc committee to run the WFI and prepare for fresh elections.
The federation’s earlier announcement that it would elect its new office-bearers on May 7 has been annulled. Singh has completed three four-year terms and is ineligible to seek re-election as WFI president.
